Diabetes is an autoimmune disease which is defined as the body’s immune system attacking itself. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is the destruction of the pancreas beta cells. The pancreas beta cells produce insulin which is the hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy purposes. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) more often than not is where the beta cells are impaired. Meaning that there is not enough insulin created or quite possibly the insulin is not being used to its full potential. This is referred to as insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes is high glucose levels which occur during pregnancy and generally resolves itself after delivery. Mody or Monogenic Diabetes is a rare form of diabetes it occurs in 1% to 4% of all diabetes cases. There are 2 types of monogenetic diabetes Neonatal diabetes mellitus, which happens in babies and Maturity-onset diabetes of the young, which occurs in teens and young adults.
Normal blood sugar ranges from 80 to 99. Prediabetes sugar ranges from100 to 125. Sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes can be controlled with a well-balanced, holistic diet and exercise. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease that cannot be controlled with diet and exercise alone and medication and insulin treatment are a necessity. Monogenetic diabetes must be treated with medication and insulin.
Although reducing Glucose levels is the primary goal in the treatment of diabetes, it is by no means the full story. Diabetes can affect all organs of the body. Your endocrine system is where it starts. Uncontrolled glucose has the ability to damage your circulatory system, intestinal tract, skin and central nervous system.

Common side effects of metformin include gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, nausea, bloating, and gas, especially when first starting the medication. More serious side effects, such as lactic acidosis and Vitamin B12 deficiency, are rare but possible with long-term use.
